Competency-Based Interviews: 6 Steps to Success!

Competency-based interviews are intended to get the best from you, the candidate, whilst also fulfilling the needs of the organization to get the very best person for the job. There are some easy steps to make the most of yourself and have a much better chance of success.
  1. Prepare well, but keep it sensible As long as you know the job you are going for, ask for details of what you will be measured against. Ask for a set of competencies. Ask for a job description. This sets you up to succeed, not just because you are better informed, but also because you have asked - which will impress the decision-makers, before you even get there!
  2. Get Creative Here is the time to use your own experiences to create 'stories' which you can use in the actual interview. These 'stories' are real scenarios that you have been a part of, which over a period of days and weeks beforehand, you write up. Maybe you will have 20+ initial ideas.
  3. Leverage! Take the very best scenarios and write them out, bullet points first. Then flesh them out, whilst referring carefully to the competencies you've been given. It is amazing how you can 'tune-in' your scenario to include many, if not all of the competencies. And if you can't fit them all in, there will be a use for them - later!
  4. Practice By reading through your scenarios (and by now you should not have more than six or seven) you will familiarise yourself with the contents, so well, that they will become second nature - even in the scary experience of an interview.
  5. In the Interview There are some tactics in here too!
    • Using your scenarios make just three key points about what you've been asked. Make them relevant and the right 'weight'. Not too long or too short.
    • After that, leave space for them to ask more - that's what they are listening for.
    • Say 'I' a lot - they want to know what your personal involvement and experience was, not 'the team' or 'they'.
    • Have fun - whilst not contrived, smile and make some simple jokes, if you feel comfortable with that - they want to employ happy as well as capable people.
    • Can't answer? That's fine. Make sure that you reflect on your shortcomings by saying things like, 'It's one of the first things I want to develop in my next job - if you did your stuff on your scenarios and your competencies well enough, you will have covered 90% of the bases well and you'll be forgiven for not being 'perfect'. If you are really stumped - say so!
    • Ask questions - relevant, about their culture, focus on developing you, opportunities - the positive 'peopley' things (remember it's your chance to see if you want to work with them!).
    • Also ask about current issues they may be facing - you did do your homework on them, didn't you?
  6. Strong Ending!Keep the whole thing light, even as you leave at the end. Have a conversation in general terms - about anything! Do make sure that you ask them some things that are about them - they will love it if you ask them some open (what, how, when, where, who) general questions about your new job! About something nice in the building or their clothes - take as it comes and do what feels comfortable!

The Best Plus-Size Suits For Job Interviews

You've fine-tuned your resume and landed that important interview for the perfect job. Now, you need to figure out what plus size suits will make you look professional and stylish. There are many options for plus-size suits, but let's narrow down the search to what will give you the sharp image that you need to impress your interviewers.  What Type Of Job Are You Interviewing For?
When you begin searching through the racks of plus size suits, keep in mind the position for which you are interviewing. If you are hoping for a job in a creative field such as advertising, art, fashion, or entertainment, you will want to choose more colorful fabrics and trendy styles in suits. Potential accountants, bankers, and financial planners should stick to conservative colors, styles, and fabrics. And, if you are hoping to land a sales position, look for tailored suits in assertive colors.
Consider Your Body Type
No two bodies are alike, but here are some general guidelines that will help you select the best style for your figure. If you are top heavy, your best suit options will be single breasted with narrow lapels. Ample hips and thighs can look slimmer with a duster or fingertip-length coat. If you have a shapely waist, peplums or jackets with fitted waists can play up your curves without looking too suggestive for an interview. Tall, leggy women always look great in pantsuits.
What To Wear Under The Jacket
If you have found the perfect interview suit, you will need to select a coordinating shell, blouse, or sweater for under the jacket. This is where you can add some pizzazz with a bright color or interesting pattern. Stay away from frills, lace, or ruffles though. The goal is to look streamlined and professional, not fussy or overtly sexy. As well, make sure that you are not showing cleavage. This is an absolute no-no for an interview.

The 10 Worst Job Tips Ever Part I

By Liz Ryan

The world abounds in bad advice for job-seekers. Here are some spectacularly unsound directives. Nearly every day, someone sends me a bit of astounding job-search advice from a blog or a newsletter. Some of this advice seems to come directly from the planet X-19, and some of it seems to have been made up on the spot. Here are 10 of my favorite pieces of atrocious job-search advice, for you to read and ignore at all costs:

1- DON'T WRAP IT UP
The Summary or Objective at the top of your résumé is the wrap-up; It tells the reader, "This person knows who s/he is, what s/he's done, and why it matters." Your Summary shows off your writing skills, shows that you know what's salient in your background, and puts a point on the arrow of your résumé. Don't skip it, no matter who tells you it's not necessary or important.

2- TELL US EVERYTHING
Another piece of horrendous job search advice tells job-seekers to share as much information as possible. A post-millennium résumé uses up two pages, maximum, when it's printed. (Academic CVs are another story.) Editing is a business skill, after all—just tell us what's most noteworthy in your long list of impressive feats.

3- USE CORPORATESPEAK
Any résumé that trumpets "cross-functional facilitation of multi-level teams" is headed straight for the shredder. The worst job-search advice tells us to write our résumés using ponderous corporate boilerplate that sinks a smart person's résumé like a stone. Please ignore that advice, and write your résumé the way you speak.

4- DON'T EVER POSTPONE A PHONE SCREEN
A very bad bit of job-search advice says "Whatever you do, don't ever miss a phone screen! Even if you're in the shower or on your way to be the best man at your brother's wedding, make time for that phone interview!" This is good advice is your job-search philosophy emphasizes groveling. I don't recommend this approach. Let the would-be phone-screener know that you're tied up at the moment but would be happy to speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday night, or some other convenient time. Lock in the time during that first call, but don't contort your life to fit the screener's schedule.

5- DON'T BRING UP MONEY
Do bring up money by the second interview, and let the employers know what your salary requirements are before they start getting ideas that perhaps you're a trust-fund baby and could bring your formidable skills over to XYZ Corp. for a cool $45,000. Set them straight, at the first opportunity.

0diggsdigg Five Ways to Find an Unadvertised Job Today!

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

A huge number of jobs are never advertised. How do you go about snagging one of these?
Network:

This is one of the best ways to find a job. Let people know you are looking for work. Tell everyone - your relatives, friends, neighbors, people at the gym. You can also talk to people who work at a similar position to the one you want. Let them know of your skills and credentials. Who knows when they may be asked to recommend someone for a job and your name will be fresh in their mind.
Investigate:
There's a couple of companies you've been looking at, but you don't see them advertising jobs in the paper or online. Find their website and check it out. Companies often post their job ads on their corporate site and don't advertise them anywhere else. A little digging might reveal they are hiring for your dream job.
Ask if a Company is Hiring:
If you are interested in working for a specific company, ask them if they are hiring. They may take your resume and keep it on file. The next time they are hiring, before they incur costs to advertise, they will look through their resumes first. And you'll be there.
Contact your Professional Organization:
If you belong to a professional organization or association, give them a call. Ask them if they are aware of any job opportunities with any companies in your field. They can be very knowledgeable about opportunities because often companies will go to them for advice on hiring or finding staff.
Contact your Local Chamber of Commerce:
They know of most businesses in a local region. They can help you find out who is hiring and who isn't. They can also inform you of new businesses (maybe a large company is coming into the area and is looking for staff) and put you in touch with business leaders. This gives you the opportunity to use your networking skills and to introduce yourself to those who make hiring decisions.
Finding unadvertised jobs is all about putting yourself out there and looking for opportunities. It's about taking the time to seek out your dream job even if no one is telling you how or where to apply. And the payoff can be very satisfying.

Students: Looking for a Sports-Related Summer Job?

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

If you love sports, there's no reason why you can't make it a part of your summer job. Check out these ideas on how to incorporate your love of sports into a job.

Hockey in the Summer?
If you're into sports, particularly hockey, why not consider applying to work at a summer hockey school or camp? These jobs are perfect for students because they are usually only for the summer. They are also a great way to get experience in coaching and working with kids, especially if you are pursing a sports, recreation, or education degree.

Summer on the Green:
Golf courses need tons of help in the summer. From driving range attendants, to landscaping workers, to working in the pro shop, you'll be exposed to golfing all summer. It's a great way to get your foot in the door if you're looking at gaining some golf-related experience.

Life-Guarding and Swimming Instruction:
If you prefer being in the water, you should check out these two summer job options. They generally require more experience and certification than some other summer jobs, but they are a great way to combine your love of water with making some summer money. Opportunities for life-guarding and swimming instructors can be found at city pools, beaches, summer camps, and recreational facilities.

Indoor Sports Facilities:
There are lots of different opportunities at indoor sports facilities that can be great if you're into sports. You can work at skating rinks, bowling alleys, in a fitness centre, or at a pool. Jobs range from doing maintenance, customer service, or selling tickets for events. A good way to prepare for a job like this is to get First Aid Certification before you apply for a job, since many sports facilities require this.

Retail Sports Jobs:
If you love sports, why not consider applying to work at a retail store that focuses on sports? You'll have the valuable knowledge that will make it helpful for customers who are looking at getting sports equipment or information about starting a sport. You might also be offered an employee discount which could benefit you as well. Consider big box sports stores and traditional stores that have sports departments.
You don't have to sacrifice your love of sports when you're looking for a summer job. Just think creatively and look for opportunities that allow you to use your sporting skills.
